It Didn't Change My Life, But It's A Comfortable Mattress None The Less
By Anthony Pantliano
The Sleep Innovations 10-Inch Memory Foam Mattress is a comfortable mattress that allows for more support than a typical innerspring mattress, while costing about the same.I've been using the Sleep Innovations mattress for a little over a month now, and while it has not revolutionized the quality of my sleep it does have advantages over a typical mattress. Prior to using the Sleep Innovations I was using a Serta mattress with a 2" foam pillow top. I liked the cushy yet firm feel of the Serta, but the pillow-top was starting to sink down in the middle of the mattress. When I switched to the Sleep Innovations mattress I noticed how it felt a lot like the Serta mattress except it bounced back more quickly when I would change positions and seemed to coddle my body better. Additionally a typical mattress does not allow for your body to sink down as deeply as the Sleep Innovations mattress. When sleeping on my side or leaning on my elbows to read a book, the memory foam allowed my hips, shoulders, and elbows to sink down deeply thus allowing my body to lie straighter. An advantage this particular memory foam mattress is supposed to have over others is that it does not trap your body heat and make you warmer. Indeed, I noticed no difference in how hot I felt compared to my old mattress. Over the first week I also noticed that the mattress got a little softer and more flexible, which was nice. Overall, the quality of my sleep has neither improved nor worsened by any significant amount. If you, however, have an older mattress without a pillow-top the Sleep Innovations will be a more dramatic, and positive, change. One thing to keep in mind is that the Sleep Innovations mattress, being made of memory foam, does not have a reinforced edge, so if you like to sit on the edge of your bed this is not the best mattress to do it with as you sink quite a bit.The mattress is shipped in a fairly large box, and it's over 80 pounds, but the box is significantly smaller than you would expect since the mattress is folded and vacuum packed inside. When unpacking the mattress I placed a flat sheet on the floor in my living room and opened the mattress there. I would not suggest opening the mattress right on top of your box spring because it needs a day or two to fully expand and air out. Surprisingly the mattress never had much of an odor at all. If I stuck my nose right on top of it had a slight odor that was similar to finger paints, but outside of that it didn't give off a strong scent, and the finger paint smell disappeared over the course of a day. Moving the mattress is a bit difficult though since it's not rigid like a typical mattress and tends to flex a bit. The mattress came out of the box with a zippered fabric cover. I had no problem fitting my current sheets on the Sleep Innovations mattress. All in all... a supportive and comfortable memory foam mattress that does not make you hot, and is a great value.03/03/2011 Update: Still using the mattress and it has not developed any sunken areas or other issues.02/20/2013 Update: Still using the mattress. No problems to report.

SI 10" Memory Foam - Will never go back to a spring mattress again.
By Voyager
After my 5 years of sleeping on a very expensive spring mattress left me with constant back pain, I decided it was time to give a memory foam mattress a try. I started my research at the tempra-pedic site, and quickly realized they were completely out of my price range. So off I headed to my local bed store, where I was starting feel like I would never be able to afford a memory foam bed. Their prices were almost as high as the Tempra-Pedic beds. Next I did some searching on the web. I found a great website sleeplikethedead, which offered some really good information for first-time memory foam mattress purchasers. I then started looking at other site selling beds on-line. There were many of them, and pricing was all over the map. I found what I believed were good deals, and within my price range. One thing I noticed about these bedding eTailers, is that they all claim their product is superior, and give reasons to justify their pricing. This made it difficult as a consumer to comparison shop. Eventually I did what I should have done in the first place, and headed over to Amazon. I was amazed out how inexpensive the mattresses were here, and with products of similar if not better quality. So if you're here at Amazon and concerned that you might not be getting the same quality as you would from a mattress specific store, rest at ease, these mattresses are just as good as any you would purchase elsewhere. So enough about my shopping experience, and on to the review. My main concerns with purchasing a memory foam mattress where quality, comfort (heat specifically), and odor. Mattress warranties are a scam, so that didn't factor into my purchasing decision. I selected this particular mattress based on the price, the exemplary reviews here on Amazon, and the fact that is was reviewed favorably at other websites. There was a similar mattress for about $[...] cheaper, but I felt more comfortable purchasing the Sleep Innovations brand. The mattress came shipped in a box the size of a dorm room fridge. It was heavy, almost 100 lbs, but I was able to maneuver it into the bedroom. Out of the box, the mattress was shrink wrapped, and you have to cut open the plastic. I would recommend using safety scissors for this, so as not to harm the mattress itself. I decided to lay the mattress on the foundation, and let it expand that way. The upside to this is that it's more maneuverable when compressed. The downside is that once it expands, it's a bit difficult to move around, so if you lay it out incorrectly on your foundation, you'll need to move it again. At first it didn't seem like it was going to expand. I had some shopping to do, so I left it to expand while I was out. 4 hours later I returned home, and the mattress appeared completely expanded. With a King size bed, it is difficult to tell which is the top and the bottom. If you look at the zipper underneath the top (or bottom depending on how you look at it), is not zippered. I had no problems with it expanding fully, or having the corners not lay flat as some reviewers had mentioned. For those with sensitive noses, there was a very strong odor similar to paint, or paint thinner. While the odor was very noticeable, you quickly become acclimated to it. Seriously the only time I could smell it was when I first enter the bedroom, then it almost disappears. I've had the bed a little over a week now, and I can still smell it when I enter the room. It has become significantly less over time, and I expect it will be gone with another week. Even with the odor it did not affect my ability to sleep on the bed. AS I've stated, you don't smell it after a short while, and I certainly do not smell it while sleeping. The odor fills the room, but if you go up to the mattress and sniff near the mattress you won't smell it.Coming from a spring mattress, memory foam certainly feels different. The bounce isn't there, which take a little getting used to. Getting up out of the bed takes slightly more effort, as there are no springs pushing you up. Rolling over is a little different as well for the same reasons. After reading the reviews I was a bit concerned about this, but I have to say, while the effect is noticeable the first time you get into the bed, you quickly adjust, and it becomes a non-issue in relatively short time. I don't even notice it at this point. One of the big downsides of memory foam is the heat build-up. Sleep Innovations claims to have a Sure Temp material that combats this heat build-up and allows cool air to flow though the mattress. I can say that I've felt more heat in my old spring mattress than this new memory foam. It has stayed very cool. In fact on cooler days, it tends to hold the cold air making the bed cold to get into. Personally I like that, some people may prefer a warm bed though. Once I'm in bed and under the covers the temp is pretty good though. I like the fact that it is cool to get into, and doesn't get hot as I sleep in it. Now keep in mind it's still winter here in the north east, so this might be different come summer time. But for now, I would say heat is not a factor with this mattress.Sleeping in this mattress is a pure delight. It is firm when you first lay on it, but then you gently sink in as it cradles you with a very soft foam. With my old spring mattress, I woke up every morning with aches in my back. I would toss and turn consistently throughout the night, and I would seldom wake up feeling well rested. With this bed, after the first night, I woke up with no back pain at all. While I did switch positions a few times during the night, not once did it waken me, nor was it the constant tossing & turning I was used to. I sleep the best I've had in years. Now my only complaint really isn't about the bed, but finding sheets for it. It seems that sheet manufacturers have taken the bigger is better approach. 10" is a standard bed height, but sheets are now designed for 17-24" mattresses. Finding anything close to a 10" pocket on quality sheets is almost impossible these days. I wound up going with a flat sheet rather than a fitted one. Thanks to the weight of the mattress, the flat sheets stay nice and tight once tucked under. Because of this, I would seriously consider looking at the 12" version of this mattress as an option. If your the type of person who cares about warranties, this one is 20 years. I doubt the bed will last that long, but even if it lasts 10 years, your getting way more than your money's worth out of it.Overall I am extremely pleased with this mattress. The quality is top notch, the comfort is exceptional, the odor will go away eventually, and the price is just outstanding. A bed is considered by many a large purchase, right up there with buying a car. This mattress was significantly cheaper than my last bed purchase, and it offers a far superior sleeping experience.

UPDATED REVIEW: Our quest for a decent night's rest. (lengthy)
By pixels and bits
This review has been updated in an effort to offer some input based on our use over time. It is a lengthy review so please accept my apologies in advance if you prefer short, succinct evaluations. I'm afraid I've always been a bit long-winded. The original and subsequent updates to this evaluation are noted and dated below.Original Review - March 10, 2011:Do yourself a favor and go look at memory foam mattresses in the store. Any store. Sit on one. Lay on one. Price them. We found that most king sized memory foam mattresses were selling for more than $1500 (in some cases, far more) - and that didn't always include the box spring/platform. To buy a king mattress in a store for what we paid to have this one delivered overnight to our door, we would have ended up with the absolute lowest end of the range of the most discounted options available. Coiled-spring city - oh joy.I'm not going to tell you how many of these king sized memory foam mattresses we could have bought for the same investment we made in TWO different sets of standard (non-foam) mattresses inside a period 5 years. You wouldn't believe me (or would think us terribly irresponsible)and it's too depressing. If it sounds like we take our bedding pretty seriously - we do. We're both desperate for a decent night's sleep due to a variety of musculoskeletal issues. My husband is a big guy with a bad back and he's tough on a mattress. When we got married 5 years ago, we bought a queen bed with a plush top. It didn't last 18 months before we were having big problems (it was a Sealy) and decided to buy something else in king size. That bed was top-of-the-line, but it didn't like being moved. The damage it took from being made into a giant desperate taco in order to get it up a flight of stairs and around a tight corner, coupled with use, turned it into a visibly lumpy and terribly uncomfortable bed.We were desperate. A few months back, I bought a memory foam topper in the hope that it might provide some relief for my husband. However much we were impressed by the material, it just didn't make much difference in the long run as the primary issue was the bent springs in our traditional mattress. About a month ago I decided enough was enough. We were getting better sleep dozing off on the couch or floor than were getting in the bed so I took the plunge and bought this mattress. I figured we had nothing to lose.I chose this mattress because my research indicated that other reviewers considered it to be firm - maybe too firm. I agree. It is very firm, but my husband is resting much more comfortably at night and my hips aren't screaming at me when I wake up in the morning. We couldn't be happier. We paid a notably low price for this mattress - especially when you consider that thanks to our Prime Membership, overnight shipping was only $3.99! At this rate, we could buy a new one every year and still come out way ahead of what we've spent in the last 5 years. Isn't that ridiculous?Delivery came in a single giant box that was about the same size as one of those half-sized dorm refrigerators. The mattress unfolded right onto our existing box spring and had gained enough loft to be adequate for sleeping within 5 hours. There was a slight chemical smell that dissipated pretty quickly and was effectively eliminated by the time we were ready for bed and put the sheets on it.This may sound silly, but I am delighted that this mattress is movable. For those who move frequently (such as military families) this can be very important. That taco we made out of our last king sized mattress damaged the coils. It had to be done, or we weren't going to get that sucker into our bedroom. While we'll never be able to be fold this mattress like it was when we got it, it will fold enough to move it around pretty easily. (It weighs about 100 lbs.)There's one final point I'd like to make. This mattress had all the air sucked out of it and was folded multiple times in 2 different directions in order to prepare it for shipping. I have no idea how long it sat in that condition before we opened it up. The point is, we slept on it without issue only 5 hours later with no visible or physical indications that it had been treated in such a fashion. Talk about a resilient material! I have no doubt that we'll be getting at least a few years of use out of this purchase. I wouldn't be surprised if we are still delighted with it a decade from now. Why not? It has a 20 year warranty. Best. Mattress. Purchase. Ever.Updated on July 8, 2011 to add:We've been sleeping on it now for nearly 4 months and my husband and I are both still happy with our decision. More than happy, really. We live in the south and the summers here are extremely hot. We've taken to removing the bedspread/comforter from the bed at night now that the heat of summer is fully upon us. The foam mattress DOES trap heat. However, it's not excessive, nor is it too uncomfortable. A simple sheet is all that my husband requires for sleeping while I use a light summer weight quilt on my side of the bed.In terms of comfort, I personally couldn't be happier with this bed. While my husband and I both have some back issues, the relief this mattress provides for the chronic inflammation in my hip joints can not be over stated. When I'm hurting, the support it provides when I'm sitting or laying down on it is often enough to delay or eliminate the need for pain medication. In my book, that's a huge deal. It doesn't always do the trick - but usually, it's enough.Added December 2012:We've been sleeping on this bed for well over a year (closer to 2 years) and we are both still waking rested with less discomfort than before. However, the bed has definitely taken on some indentations from our body shapes. I'm not so sure this is a bad thing. It's a bit like being packaged for shipping in your own little foam insert that has been molded a bit to conform to your shape. We realized this was happening mostly because we moved the bed and found that we aren't comfortable sleeping in each other's indentations. Once we flipped the mattress back to where it had been, we were both much happier. I still get a lot of relief from the pain in my hips as well as my back. We've considered replacing it, but as long as it's still benefiting us and relieving some of our pain, we'll keep it. I think we've just gotten to the point where we've "broken it in". I'll keep you posted.
